Why call on a weekend if the office is closed?
Because the first Monday appointments go to the people who already called. A toothache that starts Friday night and waits until Monday morning to dial is competing with everyone else's Monday morning. Calling when it happens puts your name on the schedule while everyone else is still googling.
The person who answers also does something useful right away: they listen to the symptoms. Some situations shouldn't wait for any dentist, and it's better to hear that at 11 PM Saturday than to discover it Monday.
When not to wait for us
Go to an emergency room first, then call us for the dental follow-up, if you have any of these:
- Swelling that makes it hard to breathe or swallow, or that's closing your eye
- A high fever along with facial swelling
- Uncontrolled bleeding that pressure hasn't slowed after 20 minutes
- A blow to the face with a possible jaw fracture, or any loss of consciousness
Hospitals handle infections that are spreading and injuries beyond the teeth. Getting through the night: what actually helps
- Pain: ibuprofen or acetaminophen, used exactly as the label directs. Some people alternate them; ask a pharmacist about that before trying it.
- Swelling: a cold compress on the outside of the cheek, 15 minutes on and 15 off. Sleep with your head propped up; the throb is worse lying flat.

- A broken edge cutting your tongue: sugarless gum or dental wax over the sharp point.
- Food packed in a painful spot: rinse with warm salt water; skip the toothpicks.
What doesn't help: aspirin held against the gum (it burns tissue), heat on a swollen face (it feeds an infection), and alcohol as a painkiller.
